Biosorption: Application Strategies

چکیده

Over the past 25 years, intensifying research into metal biosorption elucidated the principles of this effective metal-concentration phenomenon. Biosorption can be cost-effective particularly in environmental applications where low costs of the metal removal process are most desirable. Some efficient natural biosorbents have been identified that require little modification in their preparation. Engineering scale-up of the biosorption process seems fairly straightforward, based on experience from conventional sorption operations. While it seems that biosorption could hardly have any competition in many types of large-scale environmental metal removal applications, the process has not been applied as yet. Several attempts for commercialization of the process so far have not been successful, due to mainly non-technical pitfalls involved in commercialization of technological innovations. As solid capitalization is required for innovative process ventures, partnership approach is perhaps advisable. However, the choice of partners appears critical. While mining and ore processing companies appear to be excellent “clients” for innovative clean-up technologies, each is invariably concerned with mainly having only its own environmental problems successfully addressed. Pioneering and propagation of innovative environmental technologies is not necessarily an appealing venture for them. The “suppliers” of sorption and ion-exchange technologies, while closest to biosorption, is a handful of huge transnational companies with difficulties in operative decision making. Dynamic consulting companies are in an excellent position to acquire and push new process technologies into the marketplace. However, they are not known as capital-rich entities. All these aspects make a wide industrial application of a relatively little known biosorption process quite a challenge no matter how well its performance may look from the R&D angle.

Application of Response Surface Methodology and Artificial Neural Network for Analysis of p-chlorophenol Biosorption by Dried Activated Sludge

Phenolic compounds are considered as priority pollutants because of their high toxicity at low concentration. In the present study, the sorption of p-chlorophenol (p-CP) by dried activated sludge was investigated. Activated sludge was collected as slurry from the sludge return line of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Sorption experiments were carried out in batch mode. In order to invest...

Biosorption: current perspectives on concept, definition and application.

Biosorption is a physico-chemical and metabolically-independent process based on a variety of mechanisms including absorption, adsorption, ion exchange, surface complexation and precipitation. Biosorption processes are highly important in the environment and conventional biotreatment processes. As a branch of biotechnology, biosorption has been aimed at the removal or recovery of organic and in...

Application of Pomegranate Peel Waste on Biosorption of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Solutions

Pomegranate peel waste (PPW), a solid waste, was prepared and tested as biosorbent for the removal of a cationic dye, methylene blue (MB), from aqueous solutions by batch procedure. The effects of pH of solution, biosorbent dosage, contact time, and dye initial concentration on biosorption capacity were studied. MB uptake was favorable at pHs ranging from 5.0 to 12.0. The contact time required ...

Advances in Biosorption of Heavy Metals

Biosorption of heavy metals by various types of non-living (microbial) biomass appears as a very cost-effective new alternative for decontamination of metal bearing effluents. The understanding of metal biosorption mechanisms has progressed to the point where the process is being readied for scale up and field applications. Packed bed sorption columns is perhaps the most efficient equipment for...

Biosorption and me.

Biosorption has been defined as the property of certain biomolecules (or types of biomass) to bind and concentrate selected ions or other molecules from aqueous solutions. As opposed to a much more complex phenomenon of bioaccumulation based on active metabolic transport, biosorption by dead biomass (or by some molecules and/or their active groups) is passive and based mainly on the "affinity" ...
